I witnessed Ironman Texas on April 28th and was inspired to the point of registering for my first triathlon that same day. I had running and cycling experience, but the furthest I had ever swum was the length of one pool so I had no idea what it took to swim a triathlon distance. I thought it was like running; if I can go 25 yards, why can’t I go 50, 100, or 500 yards? I started going to the YMCA but was out of breath after swimming one pool length. I watched countless videos, blogs, and articles. These resources were great at showing either novice swimmers doing everything wrong or gifted... swimmers doing everything right, but I found nothing that explained how to transform oneself from novice to gifted. I needed the help of an experienced swim coach who understood the process of transforming a beginner into a competitive athlete and to provide immediate feedback during one-on-one practice sessions. I needed Manning Stinson.Manning and I began by working on fundamentals of balance and relaxation. Some of the exercises had me wondering why I was doing them, but I trusted Manning and lights bulbs eventually turned on in my head. This reminded me of the “wax on, wax off” scene in “The Karate Kid”. Manning not only knows how to prepare a training plan, but also has the ability to change it on the fly in response to what I need help on at any particular time.With about 5 weeks before my first triathlon, I was still concerned about how I was going to get from where I was, to be able to swim 500 meters. However, as we advanced to working on distance and speed, I noticed vast improvements in my swimming from one week to the next. Before I knew it, I was easily swimming my race distance in open water. The change was like magic! I just completed my first triathlon and placed 4th out of 11 in my age group. I missed 3rd place by only 24 seconds. This exceeded my expectations and I could not be more pleased. You can have a similar experience if you are willing to work hard and have a competent coach such as Manning Stinson to guide you. When I found Manning on the Internet, I had taken swim lessons several times before but never learned to swim. I was at the point that I did not think that I could ever learn.During our first conversation, she won me over and convinced me that this time would be different. She was right! Manning was not just a teacher. She was my helper. She literally held my hand at times and step-by-step helped me to develop the confidence that I needed. I started taking swim lessons with Manning a couple years ago. I had no experience whatsoever, but after a year (and a summer of torture, might I add) I could do 2000m workouts on my own. If you want to get in shape, she will make you work hard so that you can get there. She also taught me a lot about good technique, in terms of my body position and my stroke. I have not swam much lately, but I know that when I start swimming again I can continue to apply the things she's taught me before.
My daughter and I took classes with Manning over the summer. I lived a distance away but she worked with my schedule with some flexibility as needed. I appreciate how she took the time and showed the patience to teach us both all the particular necessitees involved in swimming first of all breathing techniques,streamline and balancing in the pool. I especially liked that when I told her my goals I wanted to achieve in swimming she helped me to reach those goals by the end of our swim sessions such as "freestyle" and "backstroke". She helped me in time to learn how to "tread" in the beach... waters for my summer vacation cruise; a concept I clearly did not understand initially,lol. I have had the pleasure of working with Manning for over two years. First, she coached my 18 year old son from a total non-swimmer to doing 2000 yard workouts in about a year. She is kind, yet firm, and patient yet persistent. I'm a former pentathlete (modern pentathlon in 1970s) with an iffy stroke. I saw Matthew's was better than mine, so I jumped in and worked with her for several months. She made great improvements in my body position, my freestyle stroke, and my overall efficiency.
